Marriage

Every man, on the day he says “I do,” is hoping to have large, lasting feeling for the woman he loves. Yet why, in the same hour, can a man go from feeling his wife is the sweetest person he knows to feeling she is the enemy? Why do men feel they need their “space” and that their wives are interferences?

I learned that the woman we marry is, as Eli Siegel once said, a “complete representative in miniature of the flourishing universe” — meaning she’s got the whole world in her. Seeing your wife that way, there is a real chance for marriage to be the fresh, deep adventure we hope for.
